Ashley Collins
There are over 10,000 acknowledged saints, but we know that
number to be so, so much larger. For
through our lives there are Saints that appear, and change our life, change our
direction, and lift us to another level, while asking nothing of us.
They can take many forms, sometimes kind strangers,
sometimes a teacher, a partner, a mother father, or perhaps a four legged soul
who knows only love.
The trick is to be open enough to see them, for they are
constantly in our presence, in every circumstance, in each walk of life..
There are saints that bring art into our lives… Mozart,
Beethoven, Bach – the violin is an homage to just how full music makes our
lives… yet current artist are just as important, and there is a reason couple’s
often have “our song” – music reminds us of
the fullness of feeling. The
violin is also representative of Ashley’s journey, being a child prodigy on
both the piano and violin before she was banned by playing Ragtime which went
against her parents wishes…
The most beautiful part of the Saints in our world, is that
we too, can be Saints to others… and change their lives in the most profound
way with our simple acts and kindness.
The work is layered with extensive collage… historical pages
from 1856 peer through, as well as 20th century images from life
magazine… those that paved the paths we now walk upon…
The metal is from the wrapping of old wine barrels found in
Collins vineyards… and has magnets so that photos of family can be attached and
changed.
There is a depth to this work, which commands a room and
draws focus and a desire to explore… in a way, it brings out the child in
us. A Child whom has been protected by
Saints throughout their life.
